With the focus of this issue of Update on grandparents raising grandchildren, it follows that this edition of the Technology Corner would provide a list of Web-based resources on grandparenting. The following Web sites are important resources you can use to teach about grandparents raising grandchildren. There are also resources here that you and your students can use in your practice with grandparents and their grandchildren.

 

AARP has set up a page of resources for grandparents, including information on raising grandchildren with special needs, children’s health care, and links to resources for grandparents. The site is located at http://www.aarp.org/grandparents/.

 

The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) site discusses the 2000 reauthorization of the Older Americans Act and provisions of this act that address grandparents raising grandchildren. The URL is http://www.cwla.org/newsevents/news001106gu.htm

Co-resident Grandparents and Their Grandchildren is a U.S. census report that provides statistical data on grandparents raising grandchildren, including statistics on family structure. FirstGov is the home of many resource pages maintained by the federal government, one of which is devoted to the issue of grandparent raising grandchildren. This page has links to information about benefits and assistance, health and safety resources, reports and publications, and state resources for 47 of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Grandparents as Parents is a Colorado State University site that provides statistical facts about grandparents as parents, advice for grandparents in raising grandchildren, links to other relevant Web sites, and a bibliography of publications on grandparenting. Grandparents as Parents: A Primer for Schools is a site that provides information about grandparents raising grandchildren.  It discusses ways in which schools can help. The Web address is http://www.kidsource.com/kidsource/content2/grandparents.3.html.

 

The Grandparents Association, headquartered in the UK, is an association of grandparents. The association has a hotline and an archive of real-life stories about grandparents. The Web site is http://www.grandparents-association.org.uk/.

 

Grandparents Day is a holiday established under the administration of President Jimmy Carter in 1978. Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. The Web site is http://www.grandparents-day.com/.

 

The Grandparents Rights Organization is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit corporation, founded in 1984. This organization advocates for the rights of grandparents to have contact with their grandchildren in the event of the death or divorce of the grandchild’s parent. The Web address is http://www.grandparentsrights.org/.

 

Grandsplace has links to legal and other resources, a chat room, message boards, and an online store. Go to http://www.grandsplace.com/.

 

Living with Grandparents is a page at the Kidshealth.org site.  It focuses on both the possibility that a grandparent may move in with the child or that the child may move in with the grandparent. This site appears to be geared toward children. The URL is http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/feeling/home_family/grandparents.html.

 

National Satellite Video Conference is a site that includes posted questions and answers from a 1999 video conference called "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Implications for Professionals and Agencies. Issues addressed include TANF, grandparent’s rights, and “fitness” of grandparents. The site is located at http://www.uwex.edu/ces/gprg/qandas.html.

 

The U.S. Census Site on Grandparents and Grandchildren provides access to a wealth of data from the 1990 and 2000 census. The URL is http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/grandparents.html.
