The winner of the 2007 BPD Summer Policy Fellowship is Chasity Wells-Armstrong from Governors State
University in University Park, Illinois. Congratulations to Chasity who was chosen from 31 applicants, several of whom were
outstanding. She will be a 2007 BSW graduate.
Chasity stated in her personal statement, "Remembering my childhood
history, most statisticians would have predicted that I would not have been able to work toward a Bachelors degree and continue
my education to pursue a doctorate degree." She goes on to share about her life and how she has turned adversity into strengths
which gave her a social awareness.
Chasity continues, "Today I am being educated to become a social worker with an
emphasis on policy practice. I understand through first-hand experience, the need for social workers to be involved in macro
practice, particularly, policy practice."
Chasity is member of her SW honor society, maintains a high GPA while working
55+ hours a week and is a McNair Scholar. She is a certified CADC, has worked with persons with disabilities, and currently
is employed with the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Through phone interviews and meeting Chasity at BPD in Los
Angeles, the Committee believes that Chasity is truly an outstanding person. Her obvious enthusiasm for the fellowship makes
her the ideal choice.
If you wish to contact Chasity directly, her Email is ndpendent1@sbcglobal.net.
The Advocacy and Outreach Committee commends and thanks all student applicants, their
faculty, and recommenders. We had some outstanding candidates which speaks well for the profession and undergraduate social
work education. Congratulations to you all.
