BPD is on the road to change. And, Change is Good! As you read this issue of UPDATE, you are experiencing some of the changes.
UPDATE has a new editor, Carol Williams; a new look; a new publisher, Lyceum; and a new content focus. UPDATE returns to
its original foci - vehicle for communicating recent changes, board decisions, committee activities, and featured articles
related to new developments related to undergraduate social work education and social work higher education in general.
BPD is on the road to change. And, Change is good! BPD hired it first, full time staff person. On January 3, 2005,
Kristine Moreno became BPD Program Coordinator. Kristine Moreno has an undergraduate social work degree and graduate social
work degree. BPD is very fortunate to have a social worker, with wonderful skills and experiences to facilitate the forward
movement of the organization on the road to change. BPD membership will meet Kristine Moreno, MSW at the BPD general membership
meeting on Sunday, February 27, 2005, from 5:00 p.m. - 6 p.m., and at the BPD reception on Sunday, February 27, 2005, from
8 p.m. to 12 midnight. Please join me at these events and give Kristine Moreno a special welcome to the BPD family.
BPD is on the road to change. And, Change is Good! BPD is one of three major sponsors for the 2005 NASW Congress. BPD
has 25 representatives invited to attend the 2005 NASW Congress, scheduled for March 17 and 18, 2005 in Washington, D.C.
This Congress will bring together about 300 social work leaders and other leaders from across the country to deliberate on
the future for the social work profession and professional social worker. Deliberations and discussions will occur in four
breakout groups - Children and Families, Behavioral Health Care, Health and Health Disparities, and Aging. The desired outcomes
are common agenda items to direct and coordinate the activities of social work professional organizations and commitments
to support and assist with the NASW education campaign.
BPD is on the road to change. And, CHANGE IS GOOD. BPD had a very successful conference in Detroit, Michigan. The Conference
Committee and the local conference Committee did an exceptional job. The conference committee instituted several new features
at the conference – student conference within the conference and the 1st award of the Jim Wahlberg Scholarship.
Over 250 students attended the student conference within the conference. The University of Michigan, School of Social Work
elevated the Jim Wahlberg Scholarship to another level. The University of Michigan, School of Social Work, committed to an
annual scholarship to the recipient of the Jim Wahlberg Scholarship. So in addition to the BPD award of $250 and travel expenses
to the BPD conference, the University of Michigan offered a full scholarship valued at $50,000.
BPD is on the road to change. And, CHANGE IS GOOD.
