The meeting was well attended and highlighted the need for educators of color to respond proactively to changes in the political
and academic landscape. Participants discussed the importance of mentoring new and junior faculty to achieve the following
goals: (1) learning to navigate the tenure process, (2) functioning as role models for students, (3) increasing the number
of students, particularly students of color, at national social work conferences, and (4) empowering students. There was consensus
that faculty of color, particularly junior faculty, need to understand the competing demands, which will require them to (1)
accept the strong possibility that macro issues related to racial and ethnic politics in the United States may be unlikely
to change and (2) think about how to prioritize their work to advance the needs of people of color in the academic environment
while simultaneously meeting the expectations and requirements of tenure and promotion. Additionally, there was some concern
expressed about the implications of the conceptual framework language and its importance for inclusion in CSWE standards.
