The Jim Wahlberg Scholar for 2005 was Katherine Vance, of the University of Michigan. Ms. Vance was interviewed for this summary.
When asked what motivated her to accomplish some of her many achievements, she said, "I was raised in an environment
that was dedicated to empowerment." That environment was a farm in southern Missouri, and she credits Glenda House, a
faculty member at the University of Arkansas and a mentor and friend who initially was Vance's advisor and professor, as a
central figure in her quest to become a social worker. Ms. Vance's advice for baccalaureate students to be effective in the
profession of social work includes recognizing justice; developing supports, which includes developing closeness and bonding
with other students in order to both share other’s views and strengthen their own; and developing closeness with
faculty and advisors. In closing, she remarked that "professors and students eventually became colleagues and friends."
